Hyde Park Golf Club
About
Hyde Park Golf Club, built in 1925 by Donald Ross, is one of the oldest in Florida. In 1971, the golf course was purchased by former touring professionals Billy Maxwell and Chris Blocker, who have successfully restored it.
Rolling hills, gorgeous Spanish Oaks and towering Southern Pines make Hyde Park a lasting experience. A tour stop for the men's and women's professional golf tours in the 1940s and 1950s, the golf course gained a place in history during the 1947 Jacksonville Open. The great Ben Hogan took an 11 on the par-3 sixth, which became known as "Hogan's Alley." It has a deep-faced bunker to the right and water to the left.
Hyde Park Golf Club measures 6,468 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71, and it has a slope rating of 124.

Not disappointed, but not impressed
Drainage for water is poor, rather large puddles even a day after a somewhat moderate amount of rainstorm. Some of the fairways were pretty much mud in certain spots. Course layout was really nice and I enjoyed it as a newbie golfer. This is probably a better course when it’s drier out. just wish cartpaths were smoother.
My friends who are better at golf complained profusely about the teeboxes, but i didnt really notice any difference?
Pay a few more bucks and play somewhere else
The reviews on golf now are severely outdated. The clubhouse is an eyesore…burnt down years ago and nothing been done so a portable trailor is the “clubhouse”, bathrooms on course are portapotties that aren’t kept up, greens in terrible shape and do not run true in any way shape or form…no yardage markers to be seen…except 150 post, cart path mostly broken pavement and gravel mix, ….just in general we found it to feel very run down and unkept though it seems would have been a jewel in it’s day. Yes our green fees were only $35 but we have played much nicer and kept up courses for the same price. However 5 stars for Jeff and Mike who were super friendly staff!
Ok for the price
Course was built in 1925, hasn’t had much maintenance put into it in the last 10 years. Very forgiving but the greens are terrible, you get what you pay for.
Never again
I am extremely interested in golf history and Hyde Park has that covered in many ways. But what has happened to the course over the years has me concerned the new ownership may lose it.
1. STOP your cart barn from armor alling the cart. It gets on a golfer's hands and is transferred to the grips ruining it. Had to go next day and replace almost all my grips spent extra $$$. .
2. STOP allowing booming music on the course. I go play golf and PAY my green fees for the peace and tranquil atmosphere.
3. You have the history and the framework for a great golfing experience. When you get your legal, financial and finish the rehab of the course let me know and I'll be first in line to tee it up. Until then I am done playing Hyde Park.
Average course, poor management
We did not receive a cart until 2pm for a 1:33 tee time, we were then subjected to an overbooked course with an incredibly slow pace of play. After reaching the back 9 we were told that cards had to be in by 5:15 in spite of our late start due to poor management. Would not recommend this course, not worth it.
The Course was in BAD condition.
The course was an absolutely mess! Very very poor condition. The club rentals are 25 years old, they do not have a club house. One set they charged us for was a women's set and the lady said that's all they had. Will not go back or recommend this.course to anyone. Website and pictures are very misleading.
Impressed!!!
I had low expectations playing here since there are so many bad reviews. Those review are not accurate. Probably made by some unhappy golfers that would find something to complain about if they were given a free round at Augusta. Is this course perfect? No. Absolutely not. Is it worthwhile? ABSOLUTELY!! The good = 1 - the layout is FUN! The way golf should be played. There's other Donald Ross courses nearby, but this one is the best.
2 - Where else can you play a historic course at this price? I wasn't playing great, but then I got to the Hogan's Alley sign on 6. WOW. That changed my whole mood. And what a humbling boost to play a par 3 hole that the Great Ben Hogan shot an 11 !!
3 - The course was in great condition. Not perfect, but much better than most courses in the area at this price point.
4 - The staff were awesome! Customer service is not lost here. Everyone had a smile and was helpful. The starter/ranger even helped me look for my ball on 9! That is pretty impressive. Later on, we saw him on 16. He watched us hit our shots and was cheering us. Felt pretty good to hear that!
The bad =
No clubhouse. It clearly looked under repair. There is a food truck though and the beer cart was always around. May be a big deal for some, but I'm here to play golf so no big deal for me.
2 - Some greens did have spots. But they were few and far between. I've certainly seen worse on courses in the area.
I could go on, but I hope this review gives a clearer picture. Temper your expectations here. Enjoy a fun historic course that gives great value for the greens fee you pay.
Ran us off before finishing.
Had a 130 pm tee time. Would have finished by 530 which was time of sundown. Ranger told us we had to be back to clubhouse at 515. So we still had two holes to play. And he hounded us . Why have late tee times at full price if your gonna run us off before sundown. Greens were a bit sketchy. No amenities offered.
fairways were mostly sand!
I've played a lot of golf courses in my life, but this definitely had to be the lowest rated ever.
I carry a 10 handicap and have played since the age of 10.
Kicked off
I played twilight and at 5:15 I was told to leave. Sunset wasn't until 5:40. This wasn't communicated until the ranger came by on the 13th hole. I've never played a course that would kick you off while the sun is up. Also, if it was communicated before booking the round, on the website or even at check in this wouldn't have been an issue. The 13th hole is not a good time to inform a paying customer that they would not be able to finish because the course is picking that time to close.
Greens
I've played on worst courses. I work hard to get to the green. Bald spots and burned grass? Start with the greens and work your way back. No one wants to start in the kitchen and end in the toilet.
Love Hyde Park
Great staff, great old layout. Greens have too much slope, fairways need help, tee boxes need a complete renovation.
Poor poor conditions
Tee boxes, fairways, greens, were all in below average condition. Not worth playing here at any price point right now.
